Jack Burkitt made his record 463rd and final league appearance for Nottingham Forest in a Division One match at Manchester City at the ripe age of 35, bringing down the curtain on his 15 year Forest career...

Tuesday 21st October 2008

there was a new goalkeeper for the Reds in Lee Camp, signed on loan from Queens Park Rangers. The consistent Camp would go on to be a massive hit between the sticks for Forest, signing Permanently on the 2008/09 close season. short lived, Forest parted company with Camp mid season 2012-13

Thursday 22nd October 2009

Nottingham Forest and Derby County were fined a total of £50,000 for failing to control their players after Forest's 3-2 win at the City Ground on 29th August, at the end of the game Forest winger Nathan Tyson had removed a corner flag and paraded it in front of the Derbu County supporters, sparking a melee that involved both players and staff. Tyson himself was fined £5,000 and given a two match suspended ban.

Friday 22nd October 2010

Talented NOTTINGHAM FOREST Man Lewis McGugan scored one of the best ever goals scored from a free kick at the City Ground against Ipswich Town. on the stroke of half time Grant Leadbitter fouled Chris Cohen 35 yards out from goal. McGugan took a six yard run up and fired a missile that swerved around the two man wall before exploding into the top right corner of Marton Fulip's goal. Nottingham Forest won the game 2-0.

On this day: Tuesday 23rd October 1973.

A shock for Nottingham Forest as, after 0-0 draw at home to Hull City, manager Dave Mackay announced he had accepted the offer to take over from Brian Clough and Peter Taylor at Derby County after Ipswich Town's Bobby Robson had turned down the chance to seize the reins at the Baseball Ground. this came as a bitter blow to the Forest Side, who had begun the season well, young Striker Duncan McKenzie seemed especially inspired by Mackay's presence. Mackay would add Bruce Rioch and Franny Lee to the squad assembled by Clough and Taylor, and guide Derby County to the league title in 1974/75.

Wednesday 24th October 1979

Early strikes by the forward pair Tony Woodcock and Garry Birtles were enough for Nottingham Forest to take a 2-0 victory over the Romanian side Arges Pitesti in their latest success in their second European Cup canpaign.

Saturday 24th October 1998

youthful Liverpool striker Michael Owen showed the goal shy Forest frontline (so far that season only the Forest striker, Jean Claude Darcheville, had found the net - twice) how to go about it by scoring four in a league match at Anfield. Owen gave his side the lead after ten minutes, and although Dougie Freedman had equalised with his first of the season eight minutes later, it was one way traffic from that moment onwards. Owen scored his second on 38, completed his hat trick with a penalty on 71 and made it four on 77. A goal from Steve McManaman on 23 added to the rout.

Tuesday 25th October 1977

The previous season, local rivals Nottingham Forest and Notts County were very much on a par in their battle ror promotion from the Second Division a chase in which the Reds prevailed. a few months on and already it was clear table topping Forest had taken a hugh stride forwards, emphasised by a 4-0 City Ground defeat of the Magpies in the League Cup goals by John Robertson (penalty), Tony Woodcock and Ian Bowyer (2) saw County crash out. The game witnessed a debut for 17 year old rookie keeper Chris Woods, called into unexpected action after John Middleton had been transferred to Derby County and with Peter Shilton being cup tied.......

Saturday 25th October 1980.

a rare missed game from Peter Shilton gave 19 year old Steve Sutton the chance to make his debut in a league game at Carrow Road against Norwich City, and he performed excellently in a 1-1 draw. Sutton had to wait patiently to become Nottingham Forest's regular number 1, first under studying Shilton and then Hans van Breukelen. Bizarrely, whilst still a Nottingham Forest player, Sutton would become the only keeper beaten by a Des Walker strike (obviously in the right net, anywhow), on New Years Day 1992 when Sutton was on loan and playing against Nottingham Forest for Luton Town.......

John McGovern Nottingham Forest Skipper throughout the Glory Years of the late 1970s and early 1980s was born in Montrose, McGovern's family moved to hartlepool when McGovern was seven and after excelling at both rugby and football, the youngster chose the latter and made his debut for Brian Clough's hartlepool Utd side at the age of 16. by the age of 19 McGovern had played in all four divisions of the football league (becoming the youngest player to do so) having followed Clough and Taylor to Derby County in 1968 wherever Cloughie went McGovern would surely follow, and a transfer to Leeds United followed in 1974. and then to Nottingham Forest in 1975. a steady influence at the rear of midfield, McGovern's contribution amongst a side of flair players was seldom recognised by the Forest supporters, but one does not play nearly 600 games for Brian Clough if one is rubbish. the relationship ended in 1982 when McGovern was allowed to take over as player manager at Bolton Wanderers. He also managed Rotherham United (Jointly with Atchie Gemmill) before settling into a role as co commentator on BBC Radio Nottingham........... True Forest Legend that is John McGovern (Forest skipper)

Billy Walker splashed some of the cash generated by the club's FA Cup win in May by signing Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Colin Booth for a club record fee of £20,000. Booth would only score eight goals in his first season with his new side, but the following term he tallied a far more respectable 19 in 35 league games. After the end of the 1961/62 season Booth was sold on, to Doncaster Rovers where he became hugely prolific (57 goals in 88 games). he went on to Oxford United and, finally, non league Cambridge United, where he ended his career....

John Sheridan finally played in a league game at the City Ground following his welcome capture from Dirty Leeds United, but for Sheffield Wednesday! his distribution was a feature of an otherwise dull game, settled when Nottingham Forest defender Terry Wilson attempted to hack a goal bound effort off the line only to slam it into his own met.

Billy Walker's side went down 5-3 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, their seventh successive league defeat. This latest reverse, coupled with the fact that he had conceded 26 goals in his nine league appearances, was enough to convonce Walker to drop FA Cup final goalkeeper 'Chic' Thomson and give the promising youngster Peter Grummitt a chance between the sticks instead. Grummitt would be such a success that the Wolves game marked the last match Thomson would ever play for Nottingham Forest. and he was released at the end of the season........... I HATE THEM DINGLES.

The Iceman cometh! Norwegian signing Lars Bohinen made his debut in a 3-0 win at St Andrew's against Birmingham City. an ingenious and gifted playmaker, Bohinen would be the spark that ignited Nottingham Forest's 1993/94 promotion campaign. He would remain at the club until an odd clause in his contract allowed him to leave and join Blackburn Rovers in October 1996 for a pitiful £700,000.

Thursday 19th December 1996

Frank Clarke tendered his resignation as Nottingham Forest manager after three and a half years in charge, two days after losing 4-2 at Liverpool, admitting that he thought himself unable to turn things around, The loss at Anfield was the Reds' 16th game without a win, and they'd been bottom of the Premiership for a month. This was a sad end to Clark's time at the helm, coming after promotion, a third place finish in the top flight and reaching the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup. if the £8.5 million generated by the sale of Stan Collymore had been spent on better players then Chris Bart Williams, Kevin Campbell and the dreadful Andrea Silenzi, things may have turned out considerably differently..

Wednesday 7th January 1976

although it wasn't always successful, a year and a day after his appointment, Brian Clough took his Nottingham Forest Charges down to London Road for a FA Cup third round replay against Noel Cantwell's Peterborough United following a dismal goalless draw at the Famous City Ground the previous New Year's Day Thursday. Forest were mid table in the second flight at the time but were still expected to beat the Posh, who were in second place in the Third Division. even the prospect of fourth round tie at Manchester United failed to inspire Nottingham Forest, who were dreadful as they fell to Jon Nixon's goal halfway through the first half. So no trip to Old Trafford....

Saturday 28th February 1970.

Nottingham Forest's terrible luck with goalkeepers continued when custodian keeper Alan Hill broke his arm in a 1-1 draw with Everton at the City Ground. Hill had been signed from Rotherham United in 1969 as cover for Peter Grummitt, having joined the Millers from his hometown blub of Barnsley in 1966. the virtually unknown hill had impressed so much between the sticks that the long serving Grummitt was allowed to leave for Sheffield Wednesday, Hill's broken Arm turned out to be so serious he was advised never to play football again, retiring at the age of 28, Robbed of Hill, Forest took Mansfield Town's ex Newcastle United keeper Dave Hollins on loan for the rest of the season in exchange for Duncan McKenzie. Hill would return to the City Ground on verious occasions and in various capacities in the 1980s and 1990s.

Nottingham Forest with their Sunday football experiment and welcomed Notts County from across the trent for the first league game ever played at the famous City Ground on a Sunday. a bumper crowd of 29,962 easily the highest of the season turned out, but were unrewarded by a fairly very tame goalless draw.
