Former England star David Platt was the surprise new appointment as manager of Nottingham Forest. after an illustrious career with Aston Villa, in Italy and with Arsenal. Platt failed as manager of one of his Italian clubs, Sampdoria, lacking the necessary qualifications and experiance to manage in Serie A, Despite being bankrolled by the club and allowed to spend significant amounts on the likes of Salvatore Matrecano, Gianluca Petrachi and Ricky Scimeca and David Johnson, the club sinply spent most of the period bouncing around mid table during Platt's two seasons in charge. Platt was offered the position of manager of the England U21's at the end of the 2000/01 season and, being naturally anbitious, jumped at the chance. he paid the price for the side's failure to qualify for the 2004 European Championships, resurfacing in 2010 as first team coach at Manchester City alongside former team mate Roberto Manchini.......

Heartbreak for Nottingham Forest pair Stuart Pearce and Des Walker as their dreams of a World Cup final appearance for England ended with defeat on Penalties to West Germany. of course, many England fans blamed Stuart Pearce's penalty hit straight at Bodo Illgner for the country's elimination, although Chris Waddle's miss was even worse.

Nottingham Forest's second longest serving player, James Perch, enjoyed an instant rise to the Premiership after his club had faltered in the play offs by joining Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee. Perch had managed to amass more than 200 games for the Reds in seven years despite never really holding down a regular first team place, his versatility being able to appear on the right or centre of defence or midfield, proved a curse.

Nottingham Forest completed the signing of ex Arsenal and Manchester United striker Andrew Cole, following his release from Sunderland after four days of negotiations, its a dream come true. I always said that one day i would play for Forest, said Nottingham born Cole, who was linked to the club 17 years beforehand, while Brian Clough was the Manager. the dream swiftly turned into a nightmare, and Cole was released by mutual consent 11 appearances, no goals and a mare four months into his 12 minth contract, he announced his retirement from football 11 days later.....

A hugely surprising transfer move as Peter Withe went to Newcastle Utd for £20,000, having only made one appearance in the 1978/79 season. the much travelled striker had joined Nottingham Forest from Birmingham City for £45,000 and worn the number nine shirt, proving a perfect partner for Tony Woodcock and a goalscoring end to much of John Robertson's best work. Withe would spend two seasons at St James' Park before moving to Aston Villa fpr £500,000, where he'd play the best football of his career, winning the league, European Cup and 11 England caps. (the boy did good)

Another mark was set to display the depths to which the former European Champions had sunk as Nottingham Forest were dumped out of the Worthington Cup by Darlington. having drawn the first leg at Feethams 2-2 Forest must have been confident of progressing to the next round bit it was not to be, despite Stern John giving them the lead on nine minutes. Late goals by Paul Campbell and Shaun Elliott handed the tie to the Quakers.

John Middleton made his final appearance for Nottingham Forest in a 3-2 defeat of Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molinuex. the young keeper, an England under 21 international thought to be bound for full international honours, was criticised after this match by Brian Clough for conceding five goals in his last two games, and steps were hence made to speed up the acquisition of Peter Shilton. Middleton would form part of the exchange deal, along with £25,000, which brought Archie Gemmill to the Famous City Ground later that month. it would never work out for Middleton at the Baseball Ground and injury forced his premature retirement in 1980.

The combative Forest midfielder David Prutton was born in Hull. one of the first products of Forest's successful youth policy at the turn of the century along with Jermaine Janas, Michael Dawson and Andy Reid, Prutton was given his chance a few weeks into the 1999/00 season and never looked back, providing a string of mature performances that belied his tender age while other, older and more experienced players floundered. the club's financial perils saw him sold off to Southampton for £2.5 million in March 2003, where he eventually struggled after a promising start. he returned to Nottingham Forest on loan at the end of the 2006/07 season, but let the club down when he was sent off in the 90th minute of the secong leg of the play off game against Teovil town, leaving the team to play extra time with ten men. he later joined Leeds United, Colchester United and Swindon Town........

Brian Clough and Peter Taylor secured a massive piece in their Nottingham Forest Championship squad building project by splashing a clubrecord £240,000 on England Goalkeeper Peter Shilton. the former Leicester City custodian had impresses so much as a youngster with the Foxes that the club allowed the legendary Gordon Banks to join Stoke City and Peter Shilton also replaced Banks at Stoke, but a downturn in his fortunes saw City slide out of the top flight and Liverpool's Ray Clemence take the yellow international jersey as Englands number one. Shilton would settle straight between Forest's posts and with the supreme defensive duo Larry Lloyd and Kenny Burns ahead of him would go on to concede a mere 18 goals in the remaining 37 league games of the season. he went on to regain his England place (although he had to alternate the goalkeeping duties with Clemence) and win the PFA Player of the season award.

Nottingham Forest had gained some revenge on their play off killers Yeovil Town during the summer by signing the Glovers pair of Arron Davies and Chris Cohen, and while Davies's career never took off at the City Ground, young chris Choen would become a key feature of the team, making an impressive debut at Port Vale in a 2-0 league two victory. An industrious, all action midfielder with an eye for presenting an opportunity to a team mate, Cohen had made a handful of appearances for West Ham United before moving to Yoevil Town in 2006. He won Forest's Player ofthe Year award after a blistering 2008/09 campaign, and great things would be expected of this young man .........
